Code of Conduct and Ethics

This Code of Conduct and Ethics sets out the principles Usui Reiki South Africa (URSA) practitioners agree to follow. Practitioners trained and supported by URSA commit to upholding the values of respect, integrity, professionalism, and compassion in both treatments and teaching. This Code of Conduct and Ethics is intended to guide conduct with paying and non-paying clients, students, fellow practitioners, and the wider community, and to protect the integrity and reputation of Reiki in South Africa.

1. Respect and Dignity

  • Treat all clients and students with respect, dignity, and kindness, regardless of culture, belief, race, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, physical ability, or background.
  • Value the autonomy, worth, and experience of each individual.

2. Confidentiality

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of personal information shared by clients or students in session or consultation.
  • Do not disclose information without the explicit consent of the client or, where appropriate, their guardian.

3. Informed, Transparent Practice

  • Clearly explain your training background, the nature of a Reiki session or class, the expected time and format, and your fees.
  • Be open and honest about what Reiki is and what it is not, avoiding medical claims.

4. Scope of Practice / Non‑Interference

  • Do not diagnose medical or psychological conditions or prescribe treatment.
  • Refrain from advising clients to start, stop, or change medication or treatment prescribed by licensed healthcare providers.
  • Acknowledge that Reiki is a complementary practice, and if a client or student has a medical or psychological condition, suggest they also consult an appropriate licensed professional.

5. Professional Boundaries and Conduct

  • Create a safe, comfortable environment for sessions and classes.
  • Never engage in inappropriate, offensive, or exploitative behaviour, including but not limited to sexual comments, touching of private areas, or requests to disrobe outside of any legally required contexts.
  • Abstain from alcohol or recreational drugs while practicing professionally.

6. Integrity and Honesty in Representation

  • Accurately represent your qualifications, training history, lineage, and experience.
  • Avoid making unsubstantiated claims about the effects of Reiki or your personal results.
  • Use testimonials ethically — only with explicit permission from clients and students.

7. Respect for Other Practitioners & Traditions

  • Honour and respect other Reiki practitioners and teachers, regardless of lineage or affiliation.
  • Refrain from speaking negatively about or disparaging others in a way that harms their reputation.

8. Empowerment and Support

  • Encourage clients and students to make their own informed choices about their healing and learning journeys.
  • Support others (students or clients) in their personal growth without creating dependency.

9. Legal and Legislative Compliance

  • Comply with South African law, including the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and any other applicable legislation.
  • Ensure that your practice, advertising, and business operations meet all legal, tax, and regulatory requirements.

10. Continued Development

  • Commit to ongoing learning, self‑reflection, and growth as a Reiki practitioner.
  • Be open to feedback, supervision, or guidance and work to embody Reiki principles in daily life.

11. Complaints and Remediation

  • Members acknowledge that breaches of the Code may be addressed by URSA, which may include review, and where applicable, suspension or termination of membership in the Practitioner Membership Programme.

Closing Intention

This Code of Ethics reflects our shared commitment to practicing Reiki with integrity, compassion, and respect. It is designed to protect clients, practitioners, and the wider community, while preserving the authenticity and dignity of the Usui Reiki tradition. All students of Usui Reiki South Africa are expected to uphold these principles. Those in the Practitioner Membership Programme agree to abide by this Code when they agree to the Terms and Conditions of the Programme.
