The Crane Who Forgot The Sky

This story was shared in the March online Reiki Share, where we explored the theme of coming home to ourselves. We reflected on what it truly means to feel “at home”, in that place within us where we can be fully ourselves, where there is a sense of safety and quiet steadiness, even as life continues to move around us. So often, the pressures of trying to be perfect, doing more, meeting expectations, or staying in a constant state of alertness can pull us away from that place, until we begin to forget who we really are. Yet beneath all of that, we remain deeply connected to a universal source of love and energy that flows through us. The invitation of the evening was to simply be our Wonderous selves, because that is where we find a deeper sense of safety and wholeness.

Long ago, in a quiet village near the sea, there was a young crane who lived among chickens. The crane had fallen from the sky during a storm and had been raised in the courtyard of a farmer’s home.

The chickens taught it how to scratch the earth, how to peck for grain, how to stay close to the fence.

The crane tried very hard to be like them.

It kept its head low. It folded its wings tightly. It forgot that they were wings at all.

Sometimes, though, when the wind moved across the fields, something inside the crane would stir. A restlessness. A strange ache in its chest. It would look up, just for a moment, at the wide, open sky.

But the chickens would cluck nervously. “Stay down,” they said. “It’s safer here.” So the crane stayed. Years passed

Then one evening, as the sun was setting, a wild crane flew overhead and called out. The sound stopped everything. The crane felt something ancient awaken inside its body. Not a thought, not an idea, but a knowing.

Without understanding how, it unfolded its wings. They were enormous. The crane ran across the field, clumsy at first, unsure. And then, almost accidentally, the wind lifted it.

The sky had not rejected it. The sky had been waiting.

And as it rose, it realized: It had never been a chicken. It had only forgotten the sky.

Join us for a special evening of connection and testimony. This month, we are honored to have one of our Level 2 students share her real-life story of using Reiki during her mother’s final transition. We will explore how the practice brings profound peace and emotional ease to the end-of-life process for both the individual and their loved ones. Open to all.
