When I teach Reiki, I often get asked why I prefer to work exclusively with clear quartz crystals for Reiki treatments. My answer is simple: clear quartz is not only one of the most versatile crystals in energy work, it’s also one of the most widely used minerals in science and technology. This means its benefits are grounded in more than just spiritual tradition – it’s supported by the crystal’s very structure and properties.
What Makes Clear Quartz Special?
Clear quartz is made of silicon dioxide (SiO₂), and it has an incredible natural property called the piezoelectric effect. This means it can generate an electrical charge when it’s put under pressure, and the reverse is also true. When electricity is applied, the crystal vibrates at a steady, precise frequency.
Because of this ability, clear quartz is used in:

- Watches and clocks: Quartz vibrates exactly 32,768 times per second when electricity passes through it, which keeps time with incredible accuracy.

- Electronics: Radios, cell phones, and computers all rely on quartz crystals to regulate frequencies and keep systems stable.

- Medical equipment: Ultrasound machines use quartz to generate sound waves.

- Optics: Quartz is used in lenses and fiber optics because it can transmit and amplify light with very little distortion.
It’s important to note that only pure, clear quartz is used in these industries. Varieties like smoky quartz or rose quartz contain trace elements that give them their color, but those impurities make them less reliable for precision work. Most of the quartz in watches today is even grown in laboratories to ensure perfect clarity.
Because quartz vibrates with stability and purity, it doesn’t impose its own “personality” on the energy (as rose quartz or amethyst might). Instead, it works as a neutral amplifier, making it ideal for Reiki treatments.
So when we say clear quartz amplifies energy in healing, it’s not just a nice metaphor – it’s literally what the crystal does in science too.
Using Quartz Pendulums: Sensing Blockages
When I hold a clear quartz pendulum over a chakra, the pendulum isn’t “working” by itself. What’s happening is that the quartz is amplifying subtle shifts in the energy field, which then show up in the pendulum’s movement.

- Balanced chakra: The pendulum swings smoothly, showing a free and steady energy flow.

- Blocked chakra: The movement may slow, stop, or wobble irregularly. Quartz is amplifying the lack of flow or disturbance, making it easier for me to notice.
Just as quartz crystals in watches provide a precise signal to measure time, quartz pendulums give us a way to measure or sense the energy within the body. For this reason we teach use of the pendulum in the Reiki Level 2 courses as a tool to measure the health of a chakra. Not everyone, myself included, can physically sense dense energy in a chakra, so that’s where the clear quartz pendulum is so handy.
Using Quartz Wands: Clearing and Infusing
My clear quartz wand (which I bought at Gnosis Crystal Shop in Bloemfontein) has two ends: one pointed and one rounded. Each end works with energy in a different way:

- Pointed end: This acts like a laser beam, focusing and directing the amplified Reiki energy into one spot. I use this for clearing dense or stagnant energy in a chakra, or for breaking up blockages.

- Rounded end: This radiates energy more softly and evenly. After clearing, I use this end to infuse the chakra with healing energy, restoring balance and harmony.
Here again, quartz doesn’t do the healing. It amplifies my intentions (remember, thoughts are energy) and the Reiki energy flowing through me, making it stronger, more directed, and more effective.

What I love about clear quartz is that it bridges two worlds: the scientific and the spiritual. Its unique structure makes it invaluable for technology, and those same properties make it a trusted tool in energy work.

Remember: you’re working with a crystal that is trusted by engineers and scientists as much as by healers.
