Was the Founder of Reiki Actually a Medical Doctor? The Mystery Solved

If you’ve read up on Reiki history, you’ve likely seen the founder referred to as “Dr. Mikao Usui.” For years, Western literature claimed he was a medical doctor, which led to a lot of confusion and debate when historical records didn’t match up.

So, where did the “Dr.” title actually come from?

Reiki researcher Mamoru Wakatake recently uncovered primary sources from 1929 that finally explain how this translation error happened, and it makes perfect, practical sense.

Mamoru explains:

The National Diet Library of Japan’s digital archive holds an astonishing volume of historical materials…
…. the “Occupational Telephone Directory” of Tokyo and Yokohama, published in 1929 [shows] the telephone number of the Usui Dojo is clearly listed.
What is striking is that Usui Sensei passed away in 1926. Even after his death, his name remained in the telephone directory exactly as it was.

And the most important detail is the category under which it was listed:
“Ishi oyobi Byoin” (Physicians and Hospitals).
It was not registered as a spiritual facility. It was officially and publicly recorded as a place where medical treatment was performed.
This is precisely why Usui Sensei came to be mistakenly called a “Medical Doctor” when Reiki was introduced to the West.

In Japan, we use the title “Sensei” (Teacher / Master) for anyone with specialized knowledge or authority. When Japanese people of that era spoke of a “Sensei who performs treatments,” they naturally meant a physician. It is very likely that this cultural nuance was taken literally when the teachings crossed the ocean.

We love this simple explanation! The Usui Dojo wasn’t categorized as an abstract mystical center; it was listed practically under “Physicians and Hospitals.” When Westerners heard about a “Sensei” doing clinical treatments in this setting, the title was simply translated literally into “Doctor.”

(A massive thank you to Mamoru Wakatake for diving into the archives and bringing this historical clarity to light!)
